Kate and Camilla: two for one

Kate and Camilla shot my bio picture. They shoot fashion, beauty, portraiture, and celebrity, with a slightly overexposed aesthetic. It's often the expressions they draw from their subjects which make the images feel otherworldly (and slightly, but refreshingly, weird). They're starting to get noticed a bit in the art world; they were recently included in Humble Arts Foundation's 31 under 31: young women in art photography.

After sharing a camera at school they became an accidental duo:

"We met in a photo class at Smith College and then next thing we knew we'd produced a portfolio for grad school and were interviewing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. We've been incredibly adept at evolving together. I think the key is that we're not afraid to push each other, to fight, even, but we also know we can completely count on the other. We're inextricably bound."

Here's a taste of their work:

Below are K&C hard at work on my picture, while I goofed around and worked to empty the Prosecco bottle (it would have been dangerous to stand on that thing if it were full). I worked with these ladies back when I was a photo editor at Nerve.com, and developed a serious friend crush on them. Since then, I've used them for projects whenever I can. It's just more fun to go to a photographer's studio to oversee a job when you know the atmosphere will be highly amusing.

Kate and Camilla were the first photo duo I've worked with, but now duos seem to be everywhere. I was however, surprised to see two photographer pairings included in this year's PDN 30. And both are husband and wife teams! Could this be a mini-trend? All-women teams still seem rare.

I think I actually prefer the three-person dynamic when meeting with a pair of photographers; there are more brains to brainstorm, and you can shoot an idea down without it feeling personal. But speaking from my own relationship history, it would make me nervous to go into business with a romantic partner. Talk about a messy breakup. A quick survey of the PhotoShelter photo editors for pairs they recommend:

Jenny Gage and Tom Betterton
Coppi Barbieri
Floto and Warner
Inez and Vinoodh
Gentl & Hyers

Milo Keller & Julien Gallico
Rebecca Veit and Kathryn Hillier
Nick & Chloe
Tiffany Walling McGarity and John McGarity
Markus Klinko & Indriani
Reimers & Hollar
Zoren Gold and Minor

Chago Akii-Bua and Brian Jones
