FotoFest Beijing and Contemporary Chinese Photography

PA contest winner Ben Roberts (in his suit) made me think of this image below, from the 2006 Beijing FotoFestival. Photo-eye and Hewlett Packard teamed with Chinese photographers and reviewers to create this event, modeled on Houston's Fotofest. The resulting website is super engaging. Here are some of my favorites. Especially the fire.

Great to see mention of Liyu & Liubo's "13 Months in the Year of the Dog"; I love the whole series, especially when paired along translations of the newspaper stories they depict as they are here: http://www.photobang.cn/works2006.htm (oddly, the site showed up in black and white when I viewed it in Internet Explorer but was in color in Firefox...) Keep an eye out for the "elders with swords."

And a little disappointed not to see Liwei mentioned here. He's one of my favorites in the Chinese scene. First saw his work at a decent survey of contemporary Chinese art at the Seattle Art Museum a few years ago. His floating head mirror work (scroll down at: http://www.liweiart.com/ART/liwei/PHOTO.htm/PHOTO0000.htm ) really strikes me, though I guess it's a bit gimmicky. As with all of his work, there's no photoshop trickery, just feats of ingenuity and strength.
