Mired in Wired: Camera Bags

After I took a quick peek inside Angus R. Shamal's camera bag yesterday, I found a review on Wired of the best photo bags on the market.  They chose two classics and a newcomer: A Billingham, a  Domke, and a Crumpler, respectively. These are all rather handsome, but a bit rich for my tax bracket; I usually head for the second floor at B&H where they somehow have an amazing assortment of slightly irregular bags, all for something like $30. It's in the same area as the abandoned RZs and Pentax 67s (they sit there, sad on the shelf, waiting for a home).

In any case: the cream of the camera bag crop:

Billingham 550 ($550)

Domke F-2 ($190)

Crumpler: The Whickey and the Cox ($220)

I have a Domke, not the F2, something a tad smaller. I absolutely love it. When the canvas breaks in, it is extremely comfortable, easy in-out, tough, and looks cool.

LOVE me some Domke bags.

Am I the only person in the world who likes to have a lens on his spare body?

I have YET to find a bag less than about a half a cubic meter in size that was set up to allow that with any degree of convenience. I mean, obviously it's not reasonable to expect to be able to have your 300mm on one body and your 600mm on the other in a short backpack, but come on, I can't keep my 50mm 1.4 on the spare body without losing half my cargo capacity? What's up with that?

And despite the boom in photography, still next to no one has been able to create a less fugly camera bag than these. Tragic!

I've taken to converted great bags into padded camera bags using the guts of cheaper ugly bags. It's working quite well even on heavy gear days.

Don't forget Jill-e! http://www.jill-e.com/

These bags are really cute and best of all, they don't look like camera bags. I hate it when everyone knows I'm lugging around gear if I'm trying to be sneaky. I looove the chocolate suede bag, its not cheap though. :(

Tanja- Do explain more about how you convert bags! That sounds interesting.

I can vouch for Billingham. I still have one of the first six ever made.

I bought a later model too which has the ability to use a backstrap when walking long distances.
