National Magazine Winners Announced. VF Vindication?

The National Magazine Award winners were announced last night, with National Geographic coming away the big winner, with three nods, including the photojournalism award for John Stanmeyer’s work on Malaria in the third world. Gourmet won the in the photography category, beating out bigwigs W and New York Magazine, among others. See our original coverage of the nominees here.

In the night’s most ironic twist, Vanity Fair won the photo portfolio category for a story shot by Annie Leibowitz. This comes after a week of serious sniper fire aimed at the magazine and photographer for the controversial Miley Cyrus image in the latest issue.

The story VF and Annie won for was produced in March 2007, and was awfully ambitious; the piece is entitled Killers Kill, Dead Men Die and is an outrageously over-the-top star-studded noir-y confection, even for Vanity Fair. Still, it’s lots of fun. I imagine it took a small army to make this shoot happen, in addition to style director Michael Robert and cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond; the thought of calling all of those stars’ publicists makes me a little nauseous. But that could be my fever talking.

Check out the star power below, and see more images here.

Int. and Ext. are movie terms, eh? Interior and Exterior? I am naive to the filmic lingo.

Update: Just found some great behind-the-scenes shots. Here are my two faves:

I want to be a starlet and hang out with Annie. And Robert Downey Jr.
