I know this is vaguely old news by now, but since today has turned out to be a little about the Cosmos and the future, I thought I’d link to the very nice behind-the-scenes napkin round up Wired posted about their cover shoot with Steve Carell and photographer Brent Humphreys.

I really like how Wired seems to keep records of how they put an issue together; it’s these little things that make them seem so transparent and interesting. They’re a quality rag without the intimidation. Even though they just won one of the biggest magazine awards on the block.

Some excerpts:

Humphreys drew sketches while squeezed into a window
seat on his flight to shoot Steve Carell. “The upshot was those little
napkins provided me with a sense of confidence and control,” Humphreys
says. “Of course, the flight attendant thought I was crazy and so did
the passengers next to me when they finally woke.”

Humphreys planned the shots, including one in which Carell would hold a
Rubik’s Cube. “Steve seemed to get a kick out of the idea of such a
highly produced photo shoot in LA,” Humphreys says. When Carell saw the
napkins, he told Humphreys, “That’s not my nose…” The photographer
blamed it on turbulence.

“In my mind, the poses were really commanded by the objects,” said Humphreys.

“Steve was an absolute pro,” Humphreys says. “He was very serious about
the job he was there to do, but always had one in the chamber, so to
speak.”
