FRIDAY SHOUT-OUTS, HAT-TIPS and EXALTATIONS

by Grover Sanschagrin

It’s Friday, so if it feels like I am shouting at you, well, I am. It’s time for another round of FRIDAY SHOUT-OUTS, HAT-TIPS and EXALTATIONS.

We do this every Friday, rain-or-shine, through blinding snow or blistering heat — nothing’s going to stop us from bragging about the cool things that PhotoShelter users are doing.

Let us know if you spotted any shout-out worthy situations for next Friday.

RED CARPET AWESOMENESS

I’ve never seen Red Carpet photos look as amazing as the ones that Kyle Gustafson just shot at the 2010 White House Correspondents Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

How the hell did he do this? The lighting is absolutely incredible. Best Red Carpet photos ever. He was on assignment for Washingtonian Magazine.

Kyle, whatever you did, you just set the bar VERY high.

DAD’S LAST WEEK

I just came across a very personal documentary by Jan Johannessen of the last week of his father’s life.

“My dad, Knut Werner Johannessen, was born December 3rd 1926. He had been married to my mother for over 50 years when she passed away on Desember 19th 2005,” he said. “My dad continued to live in the house the two of them had built together in the late 1960’s until my dad died on the morning of July 9th 2008.”

This project must have required an incredible amount of courage for both Jan and his father. The results are touching, to say the least.

OWYOUNG IMAGES IN ROLLINGSTONE.COM

Our very own, humble, modest, and freakishly talented photographer Chris Owyoung (who, aside from being a full-time PhotoShelter employee, somehow finds the time to shoot sweet frames of rock stars doing their thing), had a gallery of photos from The Bamboozle music festival on the front page of RollingStone.com.

Dude, don’t go on tour anytime soon – we need you in the office. 🙂

PEOPLE LAYING AROUND

“I have to be honest, I’m not sure this is enough of an amusing theme,” said photographer Richard Baker. “People on the ground, people lying, people floating and people prone. So let’s see where this goes and I’ll prove myself right, or wrong.”

I think it’s a highly amusing theme – and it deserves a Shout Out!

LUCEO AWARD DEADLINE APPROACHES

I love the all the people at LUCEO Images. I really do. They’re really super nice people, easy to get along with, talented as hell, and they really know how to get all kinds of excitement swirling all around their brand, and their images.

Their “Student Project Award” is yet another brilliant idea. (Applications are due in 8 days – May 15th.)

This year’s winner will receive $1,000 to use for their project, as well as mentorship for the project from one LUCEO member.

BUSY, BUSY, BOYLE

Steve Boyle, a reportage & portrait photographer based in Philadelphia, had a really busy April. Jobs for The History Channel, Gatorade, the NFL, Converse, Experience Life Magazine, Runner’s World Magazine and ESPN RISE Magazine took him from Philadelphia to Boston, Detroit, New York City, Baltimore, and Washington DC.

To top this off, a 5-page feature about his work in Rangefinder Magazine and even some strong stock sales made for a very nice month.

Looks like next month could be just as busy. He tells us that he will be wrapping-up a 2-month project with Gatorade and beginning another — and has a cross-country road trip planned with a fellow photographer/friend.

Steve – when do you have time to sleep?

OIL SPILL COVERAGE

Derick Hingle and Margaret Saizan have been busy covering the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, near the coast of Louisiana. When the Deepwater Horizon Rig exploded and collapsed, they shot a variety of images that fill their archives.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

For anyone looking to boost their creativity, Craig Ferguson has put together a list of 5 “challenges” you can give yourself that will cause you to think and shoot differently. After reading this list, I wanted to go right out and try a few – but I have to finish this blog post first…

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know.

Or, better yet, post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover) or “friend me” on Facebook, and that way I won’t forget it later.
