Friday Shout-Outs, Blue Ribbons, and Toots Of The Horn

Friday Shout-Outs, Blue Ribbons, and Toots Of The Horn

We’ve got a healthy heaping of sports, a few nice opportunities, one really sweet slide show, and some ‘awww cute’ moments this week in our Friday Shout-Outs. Feel free to consume it all in one gluttonous sitting – it’s a zero calorie treat!

Just so you know, we come up with a new list of Shout-Outs every Friday. People who send us suggestions during the week have a chance of sharing the limelight here on the blog the following Friday, so if you spot something that’s perfect for a Friday Shout, let us know!

WORLD CUP HEATS WAY UP

coverseenno1sm.gifWorld Cup Fever is all over the place, including right here on PhotoShelter.

UK-based Cleva Media is also there, and regularly uploading new images from the World Cup, including some very nice pictures from the opening ceremony.

Cleva Media is also blogging from the World Cup action as well.

While we’re speaking of the cool Cleva Media folks, you should definitely check out their new online magazine for independent sports photographers, SEEN Sport Magazine. This thing is loaded with amazing sports action and portrait photography. They even have a great spread of images of all the World Cup venues. Pretty damn awesome.

The next issue of their magazine is coming out in July, and they’re looking for more contributors.

SPORTIDA Photo Agency, based out of Slovenia, is publishing World Cup photos to their archive live, during game action.

A PLACE FOR IMAGE BUYERS

photobuyer-area.jpg

Part of the recent PhotoShelter site update included the creation of a special area for photo editors and buyers. This is an area just for them, and only them. Included in this area is the ability search the all of the images that are marked “Publicly Searchable” on PhotoShelter. Also included, a prominent area that allows people to search for photographer (by name, location, or specialty). In addition, they can search through our directory of Virtual Agencies.

But what makes adds beauty to the page is the gallery slideshow of featured photos from PhotoShelter members. This will be changing every month, so if you want to have your images included, we will be publishing submission instructions in the the June PhotoShelter newsletter.

Photographers included in this month’s slideshow are:

Brian Espinosa; Ben Addonizio; Chad Jackson; Danielle Libine; Jason Tinacci; Tim Burgess; Richard Grange Robinson; Gili Yaari; Martin Bailey; Randy Kerr; Brett Cole; Guillem Lopez; Enrique Castillo; Rick Osentoski; Brian James; Amyn Nasser; Gerald D. Tang; Tommy Abad; Lindsay Comer; Clay Bolt; John Thawley; Warren Rosenberg.

Congrats! Your images look really amazing.

BEST TRAVEL BOOK AWARD

Congrats to photographer-writer Greg Vaughn, whose book “Photographing Oregon“, has been named best travel book of the year by the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA).

The IBPA recently honored the best books in 50 categories at the 22nd Annual Benjamin Franklin Awards in New York City on May 24, 2010, prior to the BookExpo America tradeshow.

“Photographing Oregon” is a travel guide to the most photogenic natural features in the state of Oregon.

Suitable for anyone with an interest in photography, from avid newcomers to established pros, the book tells not just where to go but when to be there for the best conditions and offers advice on how to capture great images.

Way to go, Greg. Now all you need to do is get Oprah to mention it, and you’ll be set for life.

🙂

SUPER CUTE ALERT
Congrats to Jan Sonnenmair, who, without realizing it, caused Andrew Fingerman, our VP of Marketing, to get all swept up by his usually-hidden emotional side. (I think showing your emotional side was frowned-upon during his years living in a college frat house in Michigan.)

“This kind of stuff rarely does it for me,” he confessed to me in an email, “but this dog photo is straight-up adorable.”

Jan – that’s quite a compliment. Sorry Andrew, had to do it.

GO JUMP IN A LAKE, SON
Lake Tahoe-based freelance photographer Scott Thompson just licensed an image that will be the cover of the new Truckee, CA Visitors Guide. The photo, a picture of his son jumping into Long Lake with the aid of a rope swing, will be featured on 40,000 copies to be distributed though the next year.

Scott – your son is now a local celebrity.

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know.

Or, better yet, post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover) or “friend me” on Facebook, and that way I won’t forget it later.
