This week I get to dip into my still very vivid memories of the 80’s by including a reference to MCHammer. A cool new emerging photojournalist gallery show is about to open, a few nice website expansion ideas you can steal, a whole bunch of Superheros all in one room, and more make up this week’s Shout-Outs.

CAN’T TOUCH THIS, SO TWEET IT INSTEAD
Rapper MC Hammer used the “Tweet This” button on a gallery of photos shot by Billy Suratt. Hammer tweeted “Check out this cool photo on @photoshelter” to his 1.9 million followers.

He liked the images so much, he kept on sending out links. Here’s the transcript:

Hammer rose to fame in the late 1980s with hits such as “U Can’t Touch This,” has won three Grammy Awards and was the first hip hop artist to have an album reach certified diamond status. He performed during the Kentucky State Fair on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky and photographer Billy Suratt of Apex MediaWire was there.

EMERGING PHOTOJOURNALISTS GALLERY OPENING
“Tomorrow, Today, Yesterday,” a new photography exhibit curated by Emily Anne Epstein, is a group show featuring emerging photojournalists, including PhotoShelter members Tiffany Clark and Agaton Strom.

Each photojournalist has extensively photographed an individual, capturing the events and emotions of one person’s life, including the world of a NYC graffiti artist; a child mother in Mexico; a burlesque dancer in Brooklyn; a Reverend of the Church of Life After Shopping; and more.

“As newspapers are shrinking and there are less opportunities to publish reportage, photojournalists must create their own venues to reach the public,” Epstein said. “I have curated an event to do just that- introduce emerging photojournalists to the art world.”

The opening reception at PANDA Gallery, 139 Chrystie Street in New York City, from 6-9 on Wednesday, September 1st.

The show will remain up until their closing party, Saturday, September 18th.

3 GOOD WEBSITE IDEAS
Elsy Aumann is a photographer artist and graphic designer based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She specializes in relationship portraits: children and families as well as pregnancy, newborn and baby photography.

She’s done a really nice job with her PhotoShelter website, and came up with a few ideas to help make it even better.

1) Using one of her blank pages, she created a full list that outlines her prices, and included a nicely designed image that contains text and outlines her services.

2) She created several galleries that showcase her “other products“, such as photo books, calendars, and scrap book pages.

3) She used her other blank page to give visitors a view of her studio.

REASONS TO LIVE
Dese’Rae L. Stage is a New York City based photographer who has, historically, focused on music photography. She is currently starting a new long-term project that has a working title of “Reasons to Live.”

The project is “a documentary photo project aimed at reducing stigma associated with [attempted] suicide and self-injury (and associated acute mental illness), in addition to promoting awareness and prevention, by confronting the viewer with images of real people who have struggled with these issues–and won,” Stage said.

She is currently seeking participants to be photographed in the tri-state (NY/CT/PA) area.

THE GRANDEST RIDE
Tom Brownold, a Northern Arizona-based photographer, has just completed a new photo book titled “The Grandest Ride,” a book about The Grand Canyon, the Wranglers, the Dude and Pack Mules who work out of the South Rim of the Canyon into Phantom Ranch at the Bottom.
