Friday Happy Hour: Global Warming, Commerce & Fine Art Photography

Wrapping up the week with a whole bunch of exciting (and some downright scary) things on our radar inside the PhotoShelter community and beyond. Have a great weekend!

The Frightening Impact of Global Warming
James Whitlow Delano‘s “Europe’s Shrinking Alpine Glaciers” are both stunning and depressing at the same time, highlighting our world’s disappearing glaciers.

In the caption, James says: “The Great Aletsch Glacier [in Switzerland] is shrinking quickly due to global warming. It receded 4 meters from June until late July 2011, according to guides who visit the glacier several times every week. It is the Alps’ longest glacier at 22.6 km (14 miles) in length. By the end of the 21st century, scientists believe the glacier will lose 80% of its current mass.”
Murder in Mexico

Earlier this week, we were upset to read that another journalist’s life had been taken, this time in Mexico. Maria Elizabeth Macias, editor of Mexican daily newspaper Primera Hora was found dead last Saturday morning. Her death marks the fourth woman journalist killed so far this year in Mexico, underlining the country’s ranking on the top dangerous places for journalists. Our hearts go out to Maria Elizabeth and her loved ones.
Feature Webinar: The Future of Art & Commerce
The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) are hosting a series of ten free webinars to open up a dialogue about conflicting pressures for content creators and users. The first is already full (!) but the second is on October 19, titled “Registering Copyrights in the U.S.” A great series for any photographer new to or needing a refresher on protecting their work. “Beer in Church”
Or so says SLIDELUCK POTSHOW, who’s hosting its latest event at The Judson Memorial Church in NYC this Sunday, October 2nd with The Asian American Arts Alliance. It’s part potluck, part slideshow, featuring participating artists’ work projected inside the church. So bring some food, maybe some booze, and enjoy the show. Tickets are only $10 bucks and can be bought here. Their events are always a good time.

…in David Burnett — Too Close opening this month at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. PhotoShelter member David Burnett has covered events from the Vietnam War to Hurricane Katrina, and captured iconic figures like Bob Marley and Obama. His exhibition kicks off October 6th with a talk at the museum.
