Photography, one of the most literal mediums, can be astonishingly diverse in its final output.

The winners of the annual Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at London’s National Portrait Gallery provide a perfect example: 1,842 photographers of varying age and skill level from around the world turned their eye to a variety of subjects using everything from tintype to digital capture.

The results of this contemporary portrait competition are on display at the National Portrait Gallery, and if by chance you are in London, it is well worth your while and the £6 entry fee.

Scattered amongst the well-known work of photographers like Joni Sternbach or Sian Davey, are pieces by people like Josh Redman or Kelvin Murray, who hired an actress who had a passing resemblance to Maria from the Sound of Music.  And to see the images displays are large-scale prints reveals the artistry and glory of this work.

First prize is £15,000, and if you think you have what it takes, you can enter your work starting in May 2017.
