Friday Shout-Outs, Singing Telegrams, and Ticker Tape Parades

I guess these Friday Shouts-Outs are starting to become some people’s regular Friday escape from doing actual work – as I am finishing up this post, I am getting notes from people asking when they’ll be able to get their hands on it. Well, you don’t have to wait any longer – here they are. This week’s Shout-Outs are jam-packed with plenty of items that should keep you plenty distracted from your normal life.

This is our regular Friday gig, obviously. Send
us your newsworthy items, anything odd, funny, spectacular, bizarre, twisted, or inspirational and we just might send you some love
from the blog.

A HELPING HAND
Chris Case is a Utah-based conservation photographer who recently asked the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance if there was anything he could do to help their cause. Yes, they said – they needed images of White Canyon, a place for which they hope to gain federal wilderness designation.

“Not two days after I came back, and only one day after sending them a lightbox of some of my work, they thanked me for the images, downloaded a number, and used them in a presentation to a Utah senator who is considering sponsoring a wilderness bill in Congress,” Case said. “It isn’t wilderness yet, of course, but just knowing that my work has had the opportunity to pass before the eyes of someone who has the power to make it happen is rewarding.”

PHOTO FESTIVAL LIST
Photographer and writer Enzo Dal Verme, who is based in both Milan and Paris.

“Portraiture is my thing, but not the only thing,” he said. “I also do travel, reportage, fashion, beauty and backstage.”

Enzo produced a really useful list of Photo Festivals around the world divided by date and application deadline, and posted that list to his blog. He’s also looking for help from others – if there’s something missing from the list, let him know!

Enzo, by the way, loves tofu.

GREAT NEW BOOK – ONLINE MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA

Online Marketing and Social Media book

Photojournalist, magazine and corporate photographer Rosh Sillars (a PhotoShelter member), wrote a cool book that many of us can benefit from.

The Linked Photographer’s Guide to Online Marketing & Social Media

In addition to his photography, Rosh also serves as a creative consultant and collaborator on numerous corporate, communications, and marketing projects. He’s a great resource for photographers looking to improve in these areas.

(And let’s face it, who doesn’t need to improve in these areas?)

You can (and should) follow him on Twitter, at @newmediaphoto

CONGRATS, JACOB!
Photographer Jacob Maentz is currently based in the Philippines and, when he isn’t busy shooting freelance assignments, is filling his PhotoShelter archive with stock photography from the area.

Maentz just recently launched his website, powered by the mighty combination of Graph Paper Press and PhotoShelter, and it looks really nice. (It’s gonna be an SEO monster, I can already tell.)

He even wrote a blog post about his experiences in getting the website set up.

Great job, Jacob.

GIVING CANCER THE BOOT IN TORONTO
Dean Oros is a Canada-based freelance photographer who specializes in both stills and motion. Oros, who also shoots weddings, recently completed a project for the Canadian Cancer Society. The project involved shooting brides (and one groom) in the middle of busy, bright, and hot downtown Toronto.

“The premise of the shoot was ‘Giving Cancer the Boot!’,” he said. “It served two purposes: first as a media – awareness event. CTV did a piece for the evening news. It also landed in three or four of the daily newspapers. Second, to create marketing images for The Canadian Cancer Society.”

“As a photographer, this shoot had its challenges: crowds, more crowds, bright sunshine and an uncontrolled lighting environment with MANY white wedding gowns, location permits, accommodating the press, etc. But I love the challenge and enjoy thinking on my feet,” he said.

BEAUTIFUL IMAGES – FANTASTIC WEBSITE
Photographer and writer Jay Goodrich also launched his own PhotoShelter/Graph Paper Press combo website, and did a super nice job with it. Not only is this site loaded up with his specialities (architecture, nature, and adventure photography), it’s just plain beautiful.

I know that Jay is a man who pays close attention to details (his work is already proof of this), and his website is no different. I fully expect this website to be an SEO powerhouse. (Just by looking at his site, I can tell that search engines are important to him.)

Jay – GREAT JOB!!

I COULDN’T STOP – HAD TO SEE EVERY IMAGE

marco-vernaschi.jpg

Italian-born photographer Marco Vernaschi is currently working on a large project about the phenomenon of child witches, human sacrifice and organ trafficking in Africa.

I recently found his website, and it was like a book I just could not put down. Absolutely fascinating work, and his subject matter is some really hardcore stuff, like Child Sacrifice in Uganda. Amazing.

His gallery on the subject contains 68 images, and I looked at them all, reading each and every caption – captivated and astonished that this type of thing is still happening in the world today.

Vernaschi is currently in the post-production stage of a feature-length video documentary that was filmed while he was covering the child sacrifice story. The film will be released later in 2010.

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know.

Or, better yet, post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover) or “friend me” on Facebook, and that way I won’t forget it later.
