Friday Shout-Outs, Encore Yells, and Bro Hugs

Crazy things can be found in other worlds – like deep under the sea, or on another planet. This week’s Shout-Outs include things you wouldn’t normally see – like a tornado in the Bronx. We also get to find out what happens to your cash after you’ve made your wish, and some Holga fun in Las Vegas. Scroll on, my friend.

Shout-Outs are a regular Friday thing, and you can be part of it too. Send us suggestions! If we think it’s worth shouting about, it will show up here in the blog on a Friday. To submit something, scroll to the bottom to see how.

MAN WALKS ON MARS! (SORTA)
Nadav Neuhaus has a photo gallery that’s really out of this world (sorry, had to do it) called “Race to Mars.” The photos feature the Colorado-based Mars Society, which provides a simulated life on Mars.

“Secreted in the Utah desert, or sitting atop the harsh, icy expanse of Canada’s High Arctic, once unfathomable manned expeditions to Mars come alive,” Neuhaus writes. “Other carefully selected outposts are situated in the Australian outback and Iceland.”

“I photographed the Devon Island mission (the island is located in the Canadian arctic archipelago, some 900 miles from the North Pole), as well as a recent mission at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah desert.”

DEEP SEA CRITTERS
Solvin Zankl, a photographer based in Germany, has a really fascinating collection of images of deep sea plankton creatures that kept me distracted for a solid hour.

HOLGA, VEGAS STYLE

UK-based photographer Geoff Waugh specializes in cycle, freestyle and adventure sports photography. He also likes to have some fun with a Holga camera, too. I saw a link (on Twitter) to a very cool gallery of his Holga images from Las Vegas, Nevada.

I WISH…

Ever wonder what happens to all the money that gets tossed into a fountain after people make their wishes? Photojournalist Stefano Montesi found out at the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy.

It turns out that the coins thrown into the fountain are collected by the staff of Caritas of Rome and is used to finance the Emporio Caritas. So many people are making wishes there that they need to clean out the cash once per week!

TORNADO ATTACKS THE BRONX!
New York City-based Karsten Moran is the cheif photographer and photo editor at the Riverdale Press, a community weekly newspaper in the Bronx. He shot a series of images of the damage caused by the “Bronx Tornado,” a tornado that touched down in the Bronx, NYC on July 25, 2010. This is only the second time in recorded history that a tornado has hit the Bronx.

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know.

Or, better yet, post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover) or “friend me” on Facebook, and that way I won’t forget it later.
