Friday Shout-Outs, Winning Ways, and Great Thinking

This week’s shouts contain several impressive wins, a project that’s looking for funding, a musical photo exhibit and a few ideas worth borrowing.

FOR THE BIG BURGER WIN…
The results of our Burger Photo Contest are in! The judges, who are all extremely hungry for a burger now, culled through hundreds of entires to select the 5 winners – one for each category. Each winner gets a free PhotoShelter account for one year, and the right to brag that they know how to shoot a burger.

COLLEGE PHOTOG OF THE YEAR
Ohio University student Rachel Mummey, a PhotoShelter user, just won the title of College Photographer of the Year.

Mummey is originally from Iowa City, Iowa, and has spent the last two years working towards a Master’s in Photography from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

She spent the summer working as a photo intern at The Virginian-Pilot and is currently interning at The Palm Beach Post. This spring she will spend six month interning at The Herald in Jasper, Indiana.

For better or for worse – Images by Rachel Mummey

The College Photographer of the Year Competition was founded by Cliff and Vi Edom in 1945. The University of Missouri administers the contest with support from its co-sponsor, Nikon Inc., whose generosity allows CPOY to offer free entry to college students worldwide.

2 COOL IDEAS
I spotted some really unique ideas this week, and wanted to give props to the photogs who came up with them.

Cool idea #1:

Elijah Goodwin, a nature photographer, writer, and Ph.D. trained biologist based in Falls Church, VA as set up an “Autumn Scavenger Hunt” contest on his website. The goal – to increase website traffic, Twitter followers and Facebook fans by holding a contest.

To enter the contest, people must follow him on Twitter or Facebook, then answer 10 questions related to content found in various parts of his website. The winner will receive a free 8×12 print of their choice. Deadline for entry is midnight (EST) on November 26 – in case you’re interested in scoring a really cool print.

Cool idea #2:

Gunter Marx is a professional independent photographer specializing in travel, landscapes, environments, totem poles, and nature photography in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in British Columbia, Canada and the Canadian Rockies.

Marx is using the custom page feature within PhotoShelter to create a keyword-rich directory of his stock image archive – from A to Z. This is a brilliant SEO tactic. Clicking on any of the linked keywords will take the user to a gallery of images set up specifically for that particular subject.

THE RAY PROJECT
Nancy Siesel, a former staff photograher for The New York Times, has just launched a project on Kickstarter. She’s looking to raise funding and interest in a documentary film she is directing called “The Man Corporations Love to Hate,” about labor and human rights activist Ray Rogers.

Siesel has been filming his activities for the past two years.

MUSICAL PHOTO EXHIBIT
Gerry Walden, a stock photographer based in Southampton (UK), specializes in music and travel photography. A selection of his music images are now being exhibited at the Turner Sims Concert Hall on the Southampton University campus until December 17th.

“The images chosen for this exhibition are just a few of the artists I have captured in the last five years – all the images are unposed, many taken during sound checks etc.,” Walden said.

THEY COME IN THREES
Congrats to San Diego-based photographer Jason B. Smith, who recently scored three nice image licensing deals.

Hydro-engineering firm H2O Futures used a series of images he shot on location as well as his hydroscapes stock for their new website.

Also, a Dutch educational magazine called Alquin licensed five of his Charter School images for their publication.

And finally, National Geographic’s Geotourism campaign currently underway in the Sierra Nevadas, licensed eight of his images for upcoming promotions.
