This week’s Shout-Outs start with some cool waves, a little Bay Area love, some time in the rain forest, and a handy chart to figure out if you should be working for free. A new collective is born, we meet our own ‘interior photographer to the stars’, and we alert you to a cool free business learning tele-seminar happening this weekend. So don’t waste any more time — dig in!

Shout-Outs are a regular Friday thing, and you can be part of it, too. Send us suggestions! If we think it’s worth shouting about, it will show up here in the blog on a Friday. To submit something, scroll to the bottom to see how.

WAVES
Aaron Reed, a nature and landscape photographer from the US Pacific Northwest just put together a really stunning portfolio gallery slideshow of images about Ocean Waves.

WORK FOR FREE?
I don’t know who created this graphic, but it’s totally brilliant, and I just had to include it in this week’s shout outs. I enjoyed myself immensely reading through it all.

If you’ve ever been asked to shoot for free, you should see this amazing flow chart than helps you answer the question: “Should I work for free?

UPDATE: Dave Einsel just clued me in on the creator of this masterpiece: http://jessicahische.com/spendstoomuchtimeinternetting/?p=780

JUST A LITTLE HOMESICK
Thanks to Frederic Larson and his images of San Francisco – my adopted hometown – I was able to enjoy a little burst of home. He has a large collection of images shot in the Bay Area, in a gallery called “San Francisco Scenes.”

RAINFOREST PHOTOG
Greg Basco is a professional rainforest photographer in Costa Rica. (How cool is that!) One of the things he does a lot is hummingbird photography – but the light levels in a rainforest are usually quite low so he’s put together a solution.

“I use what’s basically a little outdoor studio with multiple flashes to achieve a creative yet natural look,” he said.

The results are pretty awesome.

AMAZING INTERIORS
Evan Joseph is PhotoShelter’s own interior photographer to the stars. He has some recent news: He was featured in the NY Daily News last week in a story titled “Big shot: Inside the mind of top real estate photographer Evan Joseph.” Sweet!!

His interior photography work is mind-blowingly cool (as is his PhotoShelter website and portfolio.) Go take a peek!

A PRIME COLLECTIVE

Have you checked out Prime Collective yet? They’re a new photographic cooperative founded in 2011.

Their six founding members – Dominic Bracco II, Melanie Burford, Brendan Hoffman, Charlie Mahoney, Lance Rosenfield, and Max Whittaker, “are united by our firm belief in the power of the image, the importance of pursuing self-directed projects and stories we believe in, and our commitment to journalistic integrity,” their website reads.

Check out the work of their photographers – each has their own distinct and successful style. Best of luck, Prime!

KICKSTARTING YOUR PHOTO BUSINESS IN 2011
Here’s a nice little free learning & inspiration event alert that could help your photography business. Michael Costuros, founder of the new evolutionStudio.com (and PhotoShelter member) has posted a public invitation to participate in a free tele-seminar with leading industry experts that will give you fresh new ideas on how to approach the unique challenges facing your photography business in 2011.

Registration for the event (which is happening this Sunday, January 16th at 3PM PST) is open now.

“It definitely could be the most valuable time you will have invested in your photography business in a long while,” Costuros said.

“I have gone outside the photo industry and invited top Silicon Valley business coach and entrepreneurial educator Bryan Franklin to join industry veterans photographer / entrepreneur / educator Mark Wallace, Blogger and Social Media expert Miki Johnson, and photographer / entrepreneur Doug Menuez in a Q/A session that promises to yield new fresh approaches you can use in your business immediately,” he said.

Thanks, Michael!

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know. One great way to do that is to post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover), and that way I won’t forget it later. Don’t have Twitter? Email me: grover-at-photoshelter-dot-com.
