Today’s Shout-Outs contain some politics, some breaking news, a new website, a vintage rock photo that still sells, a motivational idea for photo sales, and a reminder to check up on your camera insurance.

Shout-Outs are a regular Friday thing, and you can be part of it, too. Send us suggestions! If we think it’s worth shouting about, it will show up here in the blog on a Friday. To submit something, scroll to the bottom to see how.

SCOTT NELSON IN CAIRO
Photojournalist Scott Nelson is based in Cairo, currently busy shooting photos of the political unrest there. Earlier today, the Egyptian government shut down almost all Internet access in an attempt to control the protests.

Just moments before the shutdown, Scott was able to get these images out of the country and into his PhotoShelter website. At this point, his images are the last we’ve seen since the blackout.

Stay safe, please, Scott.

ROLL CALL
I was cruising through Twitter today, and spotted this:

@CQRC_Photo Did you know you can buy prints of CQ and Roll Call photos online? http://bit.ly/i0FLjA

CQ Roll Call is the premier source for news photographs of the U.S. Congress, national politics and the community of Capitol Hill. It is the largest photo staff covering Congress full time.

They produce a daily slideshow, and feature that on their website and through their social media channels.

FROM THE MUSICAL ARCHIVE
Congrats to Sheri Lyn Behr, whose photo of Daryl Hall was used in a New York Magazine profile on the musician known best for his part in the band “Hall & Oates.”

Sheri is a New York City-based photographer began photographing musicians and celebrities at the various concert halls and clubs in the New York area starting in the 1970s, and has an impressive archive of vintage rock and roll images.

A VP VISIT
I am a little late on this one, but better late than never, right? US Vice President Joe Biden visited João Silva in his hospital bed at Walter Reed on Christmas Day.

Silva is a South African photographer on contract with The New York Times who stepped on a mine while accompanying American soldiers patrolling an area near the town of Arghandab in southern Afghanistan on October 23rd, 2010. Despite immediate help from medics, both his legs were lost below the knees.

To raise funds to cover medical expenses, a website was set up by João Silva’s friends Leonie and Greg Marinovich. The site sells prints of João’s photographs.

A MOTIVATIONAL IDEA
Photographer Arlene Taveroff came up with a great idea – turning her images into motivational posters.

Her original photographs are combined with timeless quotes that together aim to inspire and motivate customers.

ARE YOU COVERED?
Part of the story reads like a photographer-themed horror movie:

_DS_0185-2.jpg

“I heard the thud as I turned to watch the camera tumble across the rocks. The lens broke from the body and then clattered some distance to end up in a small rock pool. In the corner of my vision I noticed something fly through the air and splash into Sydney Harbour – I later found out it was the camera’s battery pack.”

Photographer Paul Foley had a recent experience with a broken camera, a resulting insurance claim, and a costly series of out-of-date valuations that will make any independent photographer double-checking their coverage.

He tells the full story on his blog as a reminder to all of us to keep our insurance valuations current.

“Not an inspiring, uplifting concoction of ideas for a healthy, happy and prosperous new year – just a salutary lesson about keeping insurance values current and perhaps a resolution to watch your step,” he said.

A WEBSITE UPGRADE

Congrats to Shaun Sartin, a photographer based in Glenview, Illinois, for the launch of his new website and blog. (Looking good, Shaun.)

To get the job done, he went to web design guru Deb Pang Davis, who promptly worked with him to get his site whipped into shape — complete with a cool new logo.

“I am working on tweaking more SEO, the never ending process of moving forward,” he said, “but I think she did a great job.

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know. One great way to do that is to post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover), and that way I won’t forget it later. Don’t have Twitter? Email me: grover-at-photoshelter-dot-com.
