Friday Shout-Outs, Bragging Rights and Special Accomplishments

This week I found 7 cool things to shout about. It’s been a busy week here in PhotoShelter land – for us, as well as our members, so let’s get shouting…

Shout-Outs are a regular Friday thing, and you can be part of it, too. Send us suggestions! If we think it’s worth shouting about, it will show up here in the blog on a Friday. To submit something, scroll to the bottom to see how.

FLOOD FOLLOW-UP

Chris Mackler, a photojournalist currently based in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, wants to follow up on one of his past documentary projects, and has decided to experiment with Kickstarter to help raise the funds to do it.

“Last year, I documented the relief efforts in Nashville after the Cumberland River flooded the area in early May,” he said. “Now a year later, where are they? How are they coping? What obstacles have they overcome? Yet to overcome?”

MIGHTY BIG MONTANA IMAGES

Images made by Tony Bynum, a Montana-based wildlife, nature, outdoor commercial photographer, are being featured in a massive campaign for Montana tourism. The 2011 spring campaign is running in several cities across the United States including Downtown Seattle, Chicago, and Minneapolis.

His images can be seen on buses, train wraps, billboards, buildings, elevator doors and more.

“You never know where you’ll see one next!,” he said.

He is compiling a folder of photos of my friends in front of his photographs, and wants your help.

“Please take a moment and get a photograph if yourself in front of one of these images and email it to me – tony@tonybynum.com.”

Congrats, Tony.

COMMON WORDPRESS MISTAKES

Thad Allender, the creator of the popular photo-centric Graph Paper Press themes for WordPress, just posted a really informative blog article called “Ten Common Mistakes By Photographers Using WordPress.”

His tips are all great. My favorite, though, he saved for last:

10. Don’t use Flash

Amen!

ROUGH SEAS MAKE GREAT PICTURES
Seattle-based photographer Karen Ducey has a great series of photos on commercial Crab Fishing in the Bering Sea.

Take a look at these photos – it’s cold, it’s windy, it’s in really rough seas – I don’t know how she maintained enough balance and composure to create such dramatic images, but she sure did.

Great job, Karen!

BUILDING BETTER PHOTOGRAPHS

Los Angeles-based photographer Michael E. Stern is also an educator, author, speaker and radio host. His weekly radio show, “Build A Better Photograph” recently featured an interview with another talented PhotoShelter user, Sven Doornkaat, who shoots celebrity portraits in Los Angeles.

Stern’s show plays live every Friday at 9am, PST. Afterward, his shows are archived on iTunes, where they can be downloaded for free.

Shows begin with interviews of photographers of all types from those well known and established to those in early career, both professionals and serious amateurs.

“The mission of this show is simple: to provide technical and aesthetic knowledge of photography for advanced amateurs, college students and early career professionals so they can ‘build better photographs,’ not just take pictures,” Stern said.

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know. One great way to do that is to post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover), and that way I won’t forget it later. Don’t have Twitter? Email me: grover-at-photoshelter-dot-com.
