Friday Shout-Outs and Astonishing Awesomeness

Friday Shout-Outs and Astonishing Awesomeness

Look, up in the air… it’s a bird, no it’s a photog from a paraglider! Look, on the water… it’s a photog with a cool website shooting sailing! Looks, behind that camera… it’s a photog shooting other photogs! All this, and a little black magic wrestling, are part of this week’s Shout-Outs.

Shout-Outs are a regular Friday thing, and you can be part of it, too. Send us suggestions! If we think it’s worth shouting about, it will show up here in the blog on a Friday. To submit something, scroll to the bottom to see how.

WE AREN’T IN KANSAS ANYMORE

Franck Simonnet, a Bloomington, Indiana-based freelance photographer specializing in aerial photography from a powered paraglider, took his aerial photography talents to Joplin, Missouri – where a devastating tornado took it’s toll just 10 days before.

His series of images show the extent of the damage created better than any of the news images I’ve seen thus far. I looked through his entire gallery, and paused for a really long time on the image that showed a warehouse, with its roof removed so that could could see the its contents, still systematically organized.

Spooky.

SHOOTING THE SHOOTERS
Brian Adams, a freelance photographer based in Brooklyn, New York, put together a fun collection of images that really amused me — called “Photographers” — filled with images he shot of other photographers over the years. They’re actually all very nice portraits of some very talented photographers (including Matt Eich; Eros Hoagland; Keith Carter; and Clark James Mishler.)

TRICKED OUT WEBSITE ALERT!

French photographer Christophe Launay has a seriously cool website! You need to check this out. (He’s got amazing photos too, but it’s the wild stuff he’s doing on his site that has me extra excited.)

He’s using his PhotoShelter is fun ways. For example, check out what he’s done with his front page – using the gallery to tile in all of his galleries, and at the top, his newest images appear with an icon that has “NEW” within it.

Also, as you scroll down the page, the site navigation (on the left) follows you as you travel down the page.

Lovin’ it!

BLACK MAGIC WRESTLING
Colin Delfosse has an amazing series of portaits of Congolese wrestlers – which come in two different varieties – “classic” and “fetish”. The fetish wrestlers use black magic in the ring to defeat their opponents – and, I’ve noticed, generally make for more interesting portraits. 🙂

Fascinating.

Delfosse is one of the founders of “Out of Focus,” a photographer’s collective that documents social issues – culture, poverty, and development as well as political and environmental conflicts.

SAILING THROUGH A REDESIGN

Ian Roman, a photographer based in Poole, Dorset on England’s South Coast, specializes in yachting photography. Aside from being a talented shooter, he’s also got a nice new website that showcases his work.

In his blog, Roman recently wrote about the process of redesigning his website, and getting his WordPress blog integrated with it.

The site is nice, simple, clean, and light. I’m diggin’ it.

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know. One great way to do that is to post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover), and that way I won’t forget it later. Don’t have Twitter? Email me: grover-at-photoshelter-dot-com.
