Friday Shout-Outs, Documentaries and The Weather

Let’s put on our learnin’ hats and get some schoolin’ on things like Afghanistan and “desertification,” and how to make cheese, shall we? After that, we can talk about the weather and a few other cool things. We’ve got a full list of things to shout about this week, so I hope you’re ready.

Shout-Outs are a regular Friday thing, and you can be part of it, too. Send us suggestions! If we think it’s worth shouting about, it will show up here in the blog on a Friday. To submit something, scroll to the bottom to see how.

ENDGAME IN AFGHANISTAN

London-based photojournalist and filmmaker John D. McHugh produced a really informative documentary about the Taliban and the effectiveness of “the surge” in Afghanistan. McHugh, who was embedded with the US 4th infantry division, spent a lot of time in Kandahar, an area known as the “home of the Taliban.”

The documentary is currently being shown on the Al Jazeera website, in a story titled “Endgame?

I really learned a lot from watching the documentary. Great job, John.

DESERTIFICATION
Pedro Armestre, a photographer based in Spain, has a beautiful series of images from a subject that’s not very pretty – Desertification in Spain.

CHEESE PLEASE!

I caught this on Twitter, and thought it was interesting, so I’m passing it along to you. You may find it interesting too, if you’ve ever wondered how mozzarella cheese is made.

Cambridge, UK-based photographer Valerio Berdini shows how it’s made in his image gallery titled “Vocations: Protecting Traditions. Puglia, Italy.

Berdini is better known as a live music photographer, and has an archive of with over 500 bands shot on both film and digital from over the years.

HOW’S YOUR WEATHER?
A few people on Twitter have been offering up photographic suggestions as a way to deal with recent severe weather conditions. If you’re hot, or if you’re cold, they’ve got you covered.

This picture, by Guillaume Gaudet, will take you back to the time when New York City wasn’t approaching 100 degrees, and Coney Island was covered in snow:

And if you’re cold, this picture by Stephen Slater of a sunrise in rural Spain should warm you right up:

ADVENTURE
Greg Mionske an adventure photographer based in Boulder, Colorado, and I really enjoyed all 26 images in his “Sport” gallery.

He’s also got a nice looking website – putting the PhotoShelter Photo Wall to work on his front page. It looks great.

Speaking of nice looking websites, check out Hungary-based TRONN IMAGES, and their use of a cool background image. The slideshow sits nicely on top, and the whole website is nice and clean.

Nice job, Zoltan!

I am always looking for things to include here in our Friday Shout-Outs – so if you have anything you think is worthy, let me know. One great way to do that is to post a note to Twitter with my name in it (@heygrover), and that way I won’t forget it later. Don’t have Twitter? Email me: grover-at-photoshelter-dot-com.
