PhotoShelter’s Most Popular Photos July 2011

As you might know, I’m a pretty big fan of analytics, and I’ve been watching the “top content” report in Google Analytics for the past several months trying to figure out why certain content becomes popular. Topical photos of salient issues are an obvious reason why a photo might become “popular,” but sometimes, you just can’t tell why something went viral and caught the attention of so many viewers.

But sometimes you have to just throw your hands up in the air, and wave them like you just don’t care. So let’s forget about analyzing why something became popular, and just enjoy this eclectic mix of photos. Until next month’s edition…
1. What’s not to like about pet photographer Carli Davidson’s photos of dogs shaking side to side?

2. Alex Masi photographed Norway’s “luxury” Halden prison, which could play home to mass murder Anders Behring Breivik for the next twenty-one years — Norway’s maximum prison sentence for any crime.

3. Willie Vass caught one of those microsecond images at the right (aka wrong) angle, and the entire adolescent population of the Internet snickered. (Yes, I snickered too)
4. Jason Wickerham of Wick Photography grabbed a number of cool frames from the set of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises in Pittsburgh.

5. Brooks Kraft’s portraits of outspoken author/journalist Christopher Hitchens who was recently diagnosed with esophogeal cancer a month after his latest book was launched rounds out the top five.
