Friday Happy Hour: Obama, Levitating Ladies, and Good Photo TV

Here’s a quick roundup of fun stuff we came across this week, inside and outside the PhotoShelter community.

Obama photo makes the rounds

PhotoShelter member Kristoffer Tripplaar’s blog
claims he’s not “a real photographer,” but I think he’s not giving himself enough credit, and several major publications probably agree. His photo of President
Obama and former President Bush at the 9/11 anniversary memorial
in New
York City last weekend has graced the front pages of
The Wall Street Journal, France’s Le Parisien, Belgium’s DeMorgen and many more.

PhotoShelter member Adrian Fisk has completed two very interesting photo projects that look at what’s on the minds of young people in China and India. We found his iSpeakChina project via Twitter. He traveled across the nation asking dozens of Chinese, ages 16-30 to write what they’re thinking on a big piece of white paper. Some of the statements and portraits are fascinating. He then did the same across India

Are you “In The Loupe”?
Three of our favorite photo industry brains have come together – Stella Kramer, Julie Grahame and Allegra Wilde – to create In The Loupe TV, a new web TV show featuring photo news and opinion. The trio promises to be opinionated and even controversial, so watch out for future videos covering industry events, photographer profiles and interviews with photo legends. Some may recall how Stella blew us away with her “Building a Better Portfolio” webinar.

The Levitating Girl Trick
We’re probably late to the game on this one but if you haven’t seen it yet, this is worth a look. Tokyo resident and photographer Natsumi Hayashi is known for her self-portrait series that capture herself levitating. That’s right- as in, hovering off the ground. Her expressions always look effortless (we totally want to know her secret to jumping that high). Here’s a great collection from My Modern Met.

Cool event alert
Starting Thursday, October 13th, the Chelsea Art Museum in NYC will play host to the World Photography Organisation as it features a month-long program of events. Most notable are the 2011 Sony World Photography Awards and City Projects, a series of lectures, editing workshops, critiques and one-on-one sessions pairing young artists with renowned photographers. See the WPO’s website for more information.

Have a great weekend folks…

If you like the levitation photography then perhaps you should watch this – rather silly – DIY video on how to do it (or how not to do it):

(I particularly like this: “we have THIS rather expensive tripod” :-O )
