Friends of Anton Hammerl – Fundraiser for a Fallen Photojournalist

The ubiquity of images from almost every conceivable event around the globe tends to make us take for granted the tremendous risk that some photographers assume to capture the news. The past few years has been particularly brutal with the death or capture of photojournalists in war zones.

Anton Hammerl was a freelance photojournalist who was covering the conflict in Libya when he disappeared on April 5. There was hope that Anton had “merely” been detained like his New York Times peers had been in March, but unfortunately, this was not the case. Anton leaves behind a wife and three children.

PhotoShelter Certified Consultant David Brabyn helped to construct a website, friendsofanton.org, with print contributions from notable photographers David Burnett, Kenneth Jarecke, João Silva, Bruno Stevens, Q. Sakamaki, Greg Marinovich, Andrew Testa, João Pina, Matt Black, Teun Voeten, Teru Kuwayama, Leonie Marinovich, and Jody MacDonald.

Although the economic climate is tough, we hope that you can consider purchasing a print to help his family. Except for 5% of all proceeds raised in this online benefit, to cover administrative costs of the fiscal sponsor of the benefit, Reporters Without Borders 501 (c)(3), all funds will go directly to the Hammerl Family. As such, all donations are tax deductible under the IRS code for 501 (c)(3)s.

And if you are in London, here is information regarding the memorial service:
