The destruction and heartache left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy is still strongly felt in New York City, New Jersey and surrounding areas. Many groups and organizations have organized events to help with the relief effort, and today we want to draw attention to two of those:

Slideluck Red Hook Benefit

On Monday, October 29th, Red Hook was a thriving little corner of King’s County, New York – full of artists, designers, craftsmen, families, restaurants, workshops and other small businesses. Sandy brought in five feet of floodwater through the neighborhood, and today there are thousands still without power, heat, or water.

Slideluck, a non-profit that operates multimedia slidehows combined with potluck dinners to help bring together communities, is hosting a benefit for the community of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Join them from 6-10pm on Tuesday, November 20, at White Box in the Lower East Side for a slideshow featuring artists from the Red Hook neighborhood and also coverage of Sandy by photojournalists Benjamin Lowy, Alan Chin, Kirsten Luce, and more.

There will be a $10-$20 required donation and raffle tickets available for all kinds of amazing prizes. To reserve your spot, please visit their Facebook event page.

The powerHouse Arena’s #SandyHatesBooks Fundraiser

The POWERHOUSE Arena sits several blocks from the beautiful Brooklyn waterfront, and while they moved everything off the floor in preparation for Sandy, no one was prepared for the 14 foot rise in water level. Tubs of books, event copies, stationery, and totes were lifted off the Arena steps and sunk; cabinets bobbed in the rushing onslaught. In 20 short minutes the Arena was flooded and then emptied, breaking out the front door glass window and taking more than a few items with it.

Like many businesses in the area, the Arena doesn’t have flood insurance. So to help with the clean up efforts, the team is organizing a #SandyHatesBooks fundraiser on Saturday, November 17 from 12-9pm at the Arena in Brooklyn. It will be a full day of readings, refreshments, signings, and book browsing to help the post-Sandy recover. Suggested donation to attend is $10 – see details here.

PhotoShelter is supporting these events by purchasing 20 tickets to both the Slideluck Red Hook Benefit and #SandyHatesBooks Fundraiser. The first 40 PhotoShelter members who email marketing@photoshelter.com can attend for free on our behalf.

Please email marketing@photoshelter.com with “Attn: Sandy Relief” in the subject line, and include your first name and last name, and which event you would like to attend. We’ll notify you if you’re one of the first 40 to respond.

Thank you in advance for supporting the rebuilding of our communities.
