You could go alone to New Zealand, Mexico, Cuba, or wherever your wanderlust takes you, and bring your camera along for the trip – hope to stumble upon the ‘photographic’ spots, and take some pictures you think might be good.

Or, you could sign up for an amazing, fully immersive photography workshop in an exotic locale with a pro photographer who knows the land, guides you to all the best spots, gives you feedback during critiques, and helps you edit your new travel portfolio along the way. We prefer the latter – and after finding out about all the amazing photography courses happening all over the world this year, we had to share. Wherever and whatever your heart desires to go and photograph, there’s probably a workshop to guide you through it.

Here’s a list of just some of the photography classes happening around the world in 2014. So throw a dart on a map, and follow your arrow wherever it points.
Have a workshop to add to the list? Leave them in the comments below!

Within The Frame Workshops: These workshops pride themselves on going slow, lingering, experiencing, absorbing, savoring, and taking the time necessary to wait for the excitement of the new and exotic to blend with an understanding and appreciation of the surroundings in order to find one’s vision. Here’s some highlights for the upcoming year lead by Jeffrey Chapman:

Momenta Workshops: Momenta practices what they preach. Their mission is to use photography to create a global dialogue for a better world. They are teaching a series of workshops this year, some in collaboration with Leica. Here are a few:

By the way Sarah, glad you included National Geographic Expeditions photo offerings. It is also worth noting that every cruise of the National Geographic Explorer has a National Geographic photographer on board, aiding guests in their photography, leading shore trips, and giving lectures. Usually this means that the 15 or 20 real photo enthusiasts amongst the 150 guests get significant face time and input from a working National Geographic photographer, while traveling to really great destinations. For instance, I was on two of the Antarctica trips last year, and will be doing the British and Irish Isles trip again this year. It’s a really good photographic opportunity all the way around.

@Photoshelter / Sarah Jacobs, what criteria narrowed down your selection? With thousands of workshop each year, I’d like to understand your compilation/screening process to generate this list. Thank you!

  7. Sarah Jacobs at 12:16 pm

    Hi Carla,

    Thanks for asking!
This list is a combination of our own research, as well as workshops being taught by the PhotoShelter community. These are the workshops that stood out to us, and is by no means a comprehensive list. We aimed to compile a group of diverse and exciting workshops taught by talented photographers, and includes a broad selection in terms of price range, and length of the courses.

Here is a suggestion for photography tours in Europe. I will be leading a 13-day photo tour to Croatia in September of 2014. We will explore and photograph majestic medieval castles, ancient Roman palaces, inter-connected turquoise lakes of Plitvice Lakes National Park and the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ – the walled city of Dubrovnik.

PetaPixel republished this article and someone commented that there are no offerings from Canada. To correct this omission, have a look at three photo tours that I am leading to several unique prairie landscapes in Western Canada:

I can’t believe you missed out Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai. It is one of the best things to happen to photo workshops and education – they have a great lineup and it is an informal and excellent atmosphere. I have been thre in 2012 and I can’t wait to go again.

I attended WPPI and some workshops in Europe, but Dubai GPP is a class on its own.

Hi Sarah, Good list indeed….a nice service to provide. I know it cannot possibly be all-inclusive, but I thought that there are two extremes in which people might be interested.

First, Maine Media Workshops & College in Rockport, Maine, is the oldest, biggest and many would say the best of all of this country’s hundreds of workshops. Check out their offerings!

The other extreme can be found at http://www.ralstongallery.com/page1 ….yep, my own workshop/adventure/cruise. It’s meant to be the smallest, best and most individualistic workshop around and it’s all about seeing the coast of Maine as intimately as is possible, on my boat. Although we are already sold out for this year, some of your readers might like the idea. cheers, Peter Ralston

Very disappointing not to see any of NPPA’s long-standing and highly-regarded training programs included in your list – especially Northern Short Course (https://nppa.org/training/northern-short-course), Advanced Storytelling (https://nppa.org/training/advanced-storytelling-workshop) and Multimedia Immersion (https://nppa.org/training/multimedia-immersion). Those that have attended likely would tell you that they stack up, or are superior, to any on your list.

I’m coming to this discussion late, but wanted to chime in. I was disappointed to see that so many of the comments are from people who run photography trips and wanted to be included, as opposed to actual recommendations from people who took a photography tour and wanted to comment on it. In any case, I wanted to add these recommendations: (1) I signed up for a Santa Fe Photo Workshops trip to Cuba in 2012 and thought it was terrific. Reid Callanan was the instructor for our particular subgroup and was wonderful; other SFPW instructors who were there included Eddie Soloway, Kip Brundage (sp.?), Dustin Sammon, and Jennifer Spelman, and I heard good things from other participants as well. (2) In 2012 I also took part in a Joseph Van Os photo safari to San Miguel de Allende and thought it was very well done also. Instructors were Terry and Julie Eggers. Van Os has a pretty extensive roster of photo trips and I hope to go on another of theirs sometime.

I cannot believe you missed me 😉 Now Swaledale in Yorkshire is not the biggest place in the world, nor has ice floes of iceland, nor even northern lights but it has the best Dale in Yorkshire, a gem of stone barns, meadows, and waterfalls plus no mobile reception and the best, it is quiet http://www.fotodayz.co.uk

Hi Sarah I am surprised that you didn’t include this workshop in your list. About 8 years ago I went to Cuba with this talented photographer Manuello Paganelli when I saw on of his shows in the East Coast ( I think he lives in California). You can check his amazing street and travel photography style in the link below.
He has been working for well known magazines for many years and has been traveling for more than 25 yrs. Long before must photographers or tourist were traveling there. He probably knows Cuba better than most foreigners.

Our group was small, maybe 10 students and it was very educational and lots of fun hanging out with Manu and the great Cuban people.

The class was in English and he also worked with a local Cuban photographer. There was also a pretty young Cuban woman as guide/translator.

There are also some really awesome Photodocumentary & Ethical Photography Workshops by Photographers Without Borders that are included with G Adventure tours! I went on their Costa Rica workshop last September and it was AMAZING! Trip of a lifetime! And the teach, Danielle Da Silva is a pretty inspirin teacher, she’s the Founder or Photographers Without Borders and I know a couple of the people that came on the trip with us actually got published in the magazine and on their blog! I’m hoping to go on their Galapagos Workshop this May! http://www.photographerswithoutborders.org/workshops/

If you are ever in NYC one of my favorite workshops was with https://newyorkcityphotosafari.com . It was really short, just 3 hours. But packed full of information. The shooter who led the group was actually president of APA. I really didn’t think I would get that much out of the session but it was terrific.
