It’s time to admit we have a love-hate relationship with Instagram.

On the one hand, it’s an amazing resource for inspiration, offering users the chance to discover new talent, showing us stunning places around the world, and providing a way to connect with fellow photographers or influencers who otherwise might not be on our radar. (There’s also no denying that Instagram is the go-to resource for countless photo editors, so there’s some incentive to sharing recent work.)

On the other hand, its ubiquity can become a nonsensical time-suck, it has the potential to play into a photographer’s all too familiar imposter syndrome and because of its estimated one billion users, it’s a place to pick up some very bad photographic habits.

All that aside, we should also admit that as a company we’re on Instagram all the time ; searching for new photographers to follow, discovering unique photo projects our members are pursuing, and keeping tabs on new photo trends and news in the industry.

We’ve also quickly become big fans of Instagram’s semi-recent “save” feature—which is only as helpful as you make it—so we’re sharing six posts that caught our eye this week to provide a little motivation to get out there and shoot this weekend.

Throwback to before…when working meant a 9-5 and shooting on the weekends…when working meant working two jobs from 9am-12AM, retouching for 3 hours, then getting up at the crack and doing it all over again every damn day while sleeping on somebody’s couch…when working meant taking a two hour train ride (both ways) to Citi Field to take photos of people attending Cirque du Soleil in the cold and rain and sleet and wind. Some of you that have been riding with me since the beginning, have an idea of far I’ve come. It’s easy to focus on the success of an individual and not think about what it took for them to get where they are. Not everyone has the stamina to be a photographer. Not everyone has the stamina to take the path of uncertainty and struggle and discomfort. Shit Ain’t Easy. But this path is worth every single tear, rolling aggravation, and wave of despair. Because unless you’re one of the 1% that shit comes easy to – you’ll GO THRU IT FOR WHAT WILL FEEL LIKE FOREVER (or in my case ALMOST 7 YEARS) until you don’t have to. This is my motivation for you for the week. For more, come to my talk @ BAM tomorrow night w/ @sirsargent, also featuring @ariellebobbwillis, @tylersphotos & @micaiahcarter. Get Right for the rest of the year. LINK IN MY BIO. @afrekh by Me. #archive

Accidents can be inspiring. Last night as my glass cracked right in front of me and looked rather gorgeous, I took it as I sign that I am on the right path. Ten months in the making, Don’t Play with Your Food LA edition is happening live this Sunday at 6:30pm PCT. Watch along in my stories as today we start putting the final touches on this huge professional challenge. As my guests wine and dine, the food I love in LA will be woven into the night @dearjohnsbar and I will turn my lens onto my guests. Art meets food, my favorite intersection. (Talk about pressure to get the decisive moment.)The final series will go live on my brand new website (please take a look) on November 21st. . . . . . #melaniedunea #melanieduneaphotography #photography #dontplaywithyourfood #dontplaywithyourfoodla #artandfood #foodandart #love

robert de niro. “Robert De Niro’s father was a great artist, he had a wonderful painting studio in a SoHo loft space in Manhattan. Although the actors father passed away many years ago, De Niro kept the studio exactly as it was the day his father died. The last unfinished painting still on the canvas, the paintbrushes ready for action, open sketchbooks; It was a place of meditation. A place of truth. There is nothing so pure as an artists workplace, it reminded me of my own fathers office and art studio. I had the great privelidge to be invited by this legendary actor to do a portrait of him at this very location. The man arrived and I realized something special indeed – the fathers studio allowed us to be human. My white background covered up the environment but it all showed in De Niro’s face. This was not the celebrated actor, this was the man. Robert De Niro, I salute you.”
