Friday Inspiration: Young MVPs

The tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others aboard a helicopter last weekend in Calabasas has been circulating the news all week, and with it has come an amazing outpouring of celebratory stories and photos from sports photographers familiar with Kobe’s career.

The images have been a testament to the career of the 18-time NBA All-Star. However, we’d like to take a moment to recognize the promise of young athletes like Bryan’s daughter Gianna and her teammates Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester—who also tragically lost their lives in the crash—with six photos of inspiring young athletes doing their thing.

This week, we’re bringing you another stellar youth athlete photographed by Canadian photographer and photo editor Jalani Morgan. His project and exhibition “9 Bats,” is focuses on illuminating the Black experience in Canadian baseball, in hopes of greater representation on the field and inspiring young Black kids to join the sport.
